PEU MEDIA RELEASE ON JUNE 16‘S 40TH COMMEMORATION
The Professional Educators’ Union (PEU) joins millions of fellow South Africans and the World in commemorating the 40th Anniversary of June 16 1976. This has been indeed a fateful day in which thousands of learners in Soweto and surrounding areas put their lives on the line, in protest against the injustices of the then Bantu Education system, particularly the pushing of Afrikaans as medium of instruction by the regime, against the will of the people. The day is undoubtedly a landmark in our history will forever remain indelibly engraved in our memories and treasured dearly in our archives.
We therefore urge all of our Youths, to commemorate this day with dignity and uttermost discipline, in honour of our fallen hero’s and heroins , constituted by the courageous and fearless cohorts of 1976.The day should serve as a Well of inspiration to all of our Youths, from which lessons can be drawn that nothing is impossible when one is spurred by the coverage of his/her convictions.
PEU is vividly conscious, that this important day comes at a time when our country is faced with a number of challenges and social ills bedeviling our people in general, our Youths in particular. The high rate of unemployment and pervasive drug abuse in our communities are just but a few that come to mind. Our Youths should be reminded that the future of this country lies squarely in their hands and that we further look upon them, in providing solutions to number of challenges faced by this country. Borrowing directly from our Iconic and Legendary Nelson Mandela: it will always look impossible until it is done.
